This is a very informative article. The internet is something that is very new to parents. Although they may be computer savvy - most are not educated on what their kids can actually do on the World Wide Web. All the suggestions are great. It is tough for parents because they want to give their children freedom but if the child is naive and not responsible - the interest can lead to many dangers including cyber bullying, inappropriate photos, and meetings with strangers. Students need to be educated and learn that what is put on in text or photo on the internet is there forever – even if they delete it. In addition, the parents need to be educated so that they know what to look for. They also need to be on top of their children without being overbearing. Although I am not yet a parent, I know some mothers and fathers that ask for their child's password – and PROMISE not to invade in their business, but rather as a precaution just in case something happen.

I've been a victim of bullying all of my life, I've tried to put an end to my life a few times now because of it, within the past couple of years, I've become open about who I really am, allot of people like to harass me about it, they like to harass me because I am legally blind, because I am poor, because of a lot of reasons, and it's usually not just 1 person doing it at a time, usually it's a bunch of people posting my picture somewhere and laughing it up, I do believe that I have developed an unhealthy view on life because of what people have done to me, but I can't help but feel that way

It seems to be a never ending nightmare, it's either pretend to be someone I'm not or be forced to be harassed.

I think I might have been one of a first batch of kids to get "cyber bullied"... That being said, in all honesty the only way to stop it is to completely restrict your children's internet access by not even allowing them the privilege to knowing their own password to their computer. Even then, they could find other ways to getting onto the web or texting on their phone etc. Even if you were to stand behind your child while they were online at home, you can't follow them around all day while they are at school. There's no way to monitor the things children say and do 24/7 unless you're some sort of super hero and I'm not even sure if that would be healthy. Kids are mean and girls are cruel. With this information explosion it opened new gates of knowledge as well as power. There are just as many negative things to come out of this as positive, this being one of the negative. Encourage your child to change their internet passwords monthly, its one less way to allow them to be victimized. I'm 20 years old now and about to graduate college with a bachelors in graphic design. I'm working on a PSA to raise awareness of cyber-bullying. When I was in middle school a clique of girls terrorized me in school and in my own home via the internet. They made screen names about my name and bombarded me with horrible lies about myself. It got so bad to the point that from middle school-10th grade I wouldn't look at myself in the mirror unless the lights were off in the bathroom. I thought I was hideous, obese, and disgusting. I moved away in 9th grade, but I was invited to their prom in 12th grade. The girl that gave me the most problems in middle school, BLEW UP like a whale. I couldn't believe this girl/creature ever made me feel fat or ugly. Karma, is beautiful. I just wanted to share that with the girls who are dealing with that now. What goes around comes around, truly. This is something I am passionate about. There may not be a way of stopping it, but raising awareness to parents and guardians is vital.

I agree. Yes, I've never been bullied, but it can be stopped either by ignoring the bullies or by telling an adult. Eventually you can change schools.
